Library Information Sessions for Staff & Students available throughout February & March

As part of its ongoing training and induction programme, the CIT Library will offer the following drop-in information sessions throughout February and March.

The aim of each session is to introduce students and staff to our growing collection of online databases, to introduce our portfolio of E-Books and to give an overall insight into library resources in general. At the end of each session, students and staff should have a much clearer picture of the electronic resources available to them and should be able to use these research tools more proficiently.

All the information sessions are held onTuesdays and Thursdays in the Library Conference Room from 1.00pm –2.00pm onthe following dates:

- Tuesday February 14th

- Thursday February 16th

- Tuesday February 21st

- Thursday February 23rd
- Tuesday February 28th
- Thursday March 1st
- Tuesday March 6th
- Thursday March 8th

Theses sessions will be delivered by Deputy Librarians, Michael Costello and Tadhg Coakley

Staff and Students are welcome to attend these sessions, bookings however are required. Places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Please e-mail library.info@cit.ie to reserve your place, stating which date you would like to attend.

Emerald Management database now available.

We are proud to announce that the CIT Library now subscribes to the Emerald Management online database!

•All of the world's top 100 business schools (listed by the Financial Times Global MBA Rankings 2011 – FT 100) have Emerald authors.

•All of Emerald research journals are peer-reviewed to ensure the highest quality.

•In 2009, more than 21 million Emerald articles were downloaded and read in research and study. This equates to more than 50,000 a day, every day of the year.

•Emerald encourages research excellence in management through the Outstanding Doctoral Research Awards, in collaboration with the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD).

- Food and Beverage Rules:

: CIT Library is charged with protecting its collections and resources from damage, and providing a pleasant environment for study for students and academic staff. Please help us to achieve this goal. Food and beverages can stain books and carpets, and encourage rodents and insects. Noisy and smelly foods are not appreciated by others studying and working in the Library, and soiled tables and chairs are offensive to all. If you want to eat, please go to the canteen.
To create a more pleasant environment for all library users, please follow these rules:

Only drinks in plastic bottles are permitted in the library. No cans.
Hot beverages such as tea, coffee, etc. are not permitted.
The possession of alcoholic beverages will result in immediate and permanent suspension from the library, and will be reported to the college registrar.
Food is not allowed in the library.
Food waste attracts pests. Study tables should be free of food, food waste, wrappers, etc., at all times, and such waste must be disposed of outside the library. If these are on your study table, you are responsible for them.
Users not complying with these rules will be fined €6 and may be barred from the use of the library.

Graf Collection at the PatersonMuseum, New Jersey are nowavailable on CD-ROM in the Holland Library in NMCI. The collection alsofeatures some copies of original photographs held at Christian Brothers' GeneralateArchives, Rome. The originals were sent by John Philip Holland to his friendBr. John A. Yorke, Dundalk, Ireland circa 1897/1898. Contact the NMCI Library staff for more details.

ARTSTOR Database now available:

The ARTSTOR Digital Library is a nonprofit resource that provides more than one million high quality digital images in the arts, architecture, humanities, and sciences with an accessible suite of software tools for teaching and research. This community-built collection comprises contributions from outstanding international museums, photographers, libraries, scholars, photo archives, and artists and artists' estates.

'NO TO NOISE' Campaign now being enforced:

Library staff are now enforcing a 'NO TO NOISE' campaign in the CIT Library.

This inititiative which started in early May will continue until the end of the Summer Examinations.

Students found making noise, talking, using mobile phones or generally causing a disturbance will be warned and asked to leave the building if they persist.

Students found eating and drinking (*with the exception of bottled water) in the library or attempting to bring food into the library will also be asked to leave.

Your Co-operation in this matter is appreciated.

Together we can make the CIT Library a better place to study this May.

Eating & Drinking now banned in Library...read more:

In agreement with all Faculties, Departments and The Students Union it has been agreed to ban all eating & drinking in all Lecture Theatres, Classrooms,Labs and Libraries.

This is being done in support of the recently launched
New Recycling Programme and you will by now all recognise the new recycling bins in place.

Your full support and help in this initiative is of the utmost importance and we are seeking your co-operation right throughout the term.

All staff are also giving their support and again your support for them is greatly appreciated.

The consumption of ordinary bottled water is permitted but
please take away all bottles you may use and recycle them.

RED Top Bin = All Bottles/Cans/Tetra Packs
BLUE Top Bin = All paper/light cardboard
GREEN Top Bin = General Waste for Food Products & Wrapping

Students with Dyslexia can now pick up a clear blue acetate sheet at the library issue desk.

This sheet can be placed over the page of a text book or even a computer screen, thereby making the text easier to read.

Online Academic Research Guide

CIT Libraries have produced an online interactive guide for academic research with four main sections:

1. CIT Library Resources
2. Internet Searching
3. Referencing
4. ZOTERO Referencing Software

This Guide aims to show CIT students how to acquire and employ some of the best available academic resources for use in your research in CIT.
At the end of the Guide, you will know about the resources that have been provided for you within CIT Libraries (both online and in print) and also what is available elsewhere – especially on the internet.

- You will also be able to decide what is best for you and your academic needs and how it can be acquired.

- You will be able to show, in your reports or theses, how you used these resources by the proper referencing of what you acquired and utilised.

- You will also be able to use the Referencing Software System ZOTERO to help you with this work, if required.

Book Self Issue/Return Kiosk now available:

We are pleased to announce the introduction of a new Book Self-Issue/Return Kiosk to the CIT Library.

This easy to use, touch-screen kiosk is located near the main issue desk on the ground floor of the library.

Instructions are available on screen or alternatively you can ask a member of the Library staff for a quick demonstration!

This new facility will help us to provide an even more efficient service and will enable you to bypass the queue at the Library issue desk at peak times of the day

JSTOR just added to our collection of Library databases:

Just added to our database collection, The JSTOR (Ireland Collection) is an interdisciplinary collection of journals and other materials. The content in this collection covers a wide range of disciplines, including music, art, history, literature, archaeology, sociology, mathematics,and science, among many others. New Elsevier Training Guides for ScienceDirect Database

Elsevier have just released a new training suite to help you to get the most out of the Science Direct database.

This training suite consists of a series of online, one to one training sessions with a professional Elsevier Trainer. This will involve a live, web-based how-to session demonstrating ways to use ScienceDirect and find the information you need.

Alternatively you can view a pre-recorded session or download an interactive ScienceDirect tutorial.

Visit DOAJ: Directory of Open Access Journals for a comprehensive list of over 4067 freely available electronic journals.

The DOAJ: Directory of Open Access Journals can be accessed via the Journal Titles page on the library catalogue or by entering the following URL into your Web browser http://www.doaj.org/

This service covers free, full text, quality controlled scientific and scholarly journals. It aims to cover all subjects and languages. There are now over 4195 journals in the directory. Currently 1538 journals are searchable at article level.

The aim of the Directory of Open Access Journals is to increase the visibility and ease of use of open access scientific and scholarly journals thereby promoting their increased usage and impact.

The Directory aims to be comprehensive and uses a quality control system to guarantee the content.

In short it is a one stop shop for users to Open Access Journals.

New Photocopiers/Printers in Library

We are pleased to announce the introduction of two new photocopiers in the Library. Students can use these photocopiers by means of their CIT Smart Card. Full intructions can be found at http://www.mycit.ie/

Students can also print from any of the computers in the library to these new photocopiers/printers. Information on this can also be found at http://www.mycit.ie/

In the meantime, students that still have older copy cards originally purchased in the Library can continue to use these cards on our older photocopiers until that credit runs out. These older photocopiers will remain in place until the start of the new academic term.

Just Added - ticTOCs - Journal Tables of Contents Service

Keeping up-to-date with scholarly literature just became much easier, thanks to a new service called ticTOCs - Journal Tables of Contents Service.

ticTOCs is a new scholarly journal tables of contents (TOCs) service. Its free, its easy to use, and it provides access to the most recent tables of contents of over 11,000 scholarly journals from more than 400 publishers. It helps scholars, researchers, academics and anyone else keep up-to-date with what’s being published in the most recent issues of journals on almost any subject.
Using ticTOCs, you can find journals of interest by title, subject or publisher and save the content pages of selected journals to MyTOCs so that you can view future TOCs (free registration is required if you want to permanently save your MyTOCs). ticTOCs also makes it easy to export selected TOC RSS feeds to popular feedreaders such as Google Reader and Bloglines.

The CIT Library Catalogue now features WebPAC Pro

WebPAC Pro is a new and improved version of our previous Millennium Library software which all of our patrons have used for the past number of years. This new software will allow CIT Libraries to enhance its online presence even further and to take full advantage of the very latest Web technologies.

The key features of WebPAC Pro over our previous library software include the following:
A new and improved online catalogue environment provides an even faster-paced online experience with simple point & click navigation, working in conjunction with a host of simple to use end-user focused features.

· The incorporation of RightResult™ Search Technology in WebPac Pro means added precision when carrying out searches for various types of library materials. Search hits are now ranked in terms of relevance, making searching the library catalogue an even more intuitive experience than before.

· The Catalogue is now capable of displaying fifty ‘hits’ at any one time and entries can now be copied, saved or exported at the end of a session to allow for incorporation in a possible bibliography at a later stage.

· WebPAC Pro sets the stage for advanced RSS utilisation which effectively allows live feeds to be added to any section of the Library catalogue. This effectively makes utilisation of the catalogue a far more interactive experience.

Wilson OmniFile added to Library Databases:

Last October the CIT Library introduced trial access to the Wilson OmniFile Database.

Feedback from staff and students proved so positive, that we have decided to make this database a permanent part of our database collection.

As many of you are probably already aware, this full text database covers all core subject areas including:Applied Science & Technology l Art l Biological & Agricultural Sciences l Business l Education l General Science l Humanities l Law l Library & Information Science l Social Sciences l

The key strengths of the database are as follows:

2008 CIT Library Journals Holdings List Now Available

Please note that the latest version of the CIT Library Journals Holdings List is now available at http://library.cit.ie/screens/journals_2008.pdf

This comprehensive list outlines the thousands of journal titles that are currently available in the CIT Library in both hardcopy and electronic format. The list makes it easy for students and staff to search for a particular tile and to see where it can be accessed (i.e. is it available in hard copy format in the library or is it available in one of the online databases?) . A new feature of this new list is the introction of a 'Dates helds' section where Students can now see at a glance as to which years are available for any particular title.

The previous version of this Journals list proved to be very popular with students, staff and researchers and we are confident that this revised version with its various updates will prove to be even more popular. As stated previously the list can be accessed at http://library.cit.ie/screens/journals_2008.pdf and is also available in hardcopy format at the main issue desk if you would like to refer to it at any time.

New RSS Feed feature added to Useful Websites Resource

Please note that the Useful Websites feature (http://library.cit.ie/screens/useful_websites.html) on the Library homepage has been extensively revised in recent times.

The new layout incorporates RSS feeds for each subject area. The content of these feeds change on a regular basis so students are advised to check back frequently to view new material. By clicking on topic coverage in each RSS feed, users are automatically brought to the homepage of the originating content. All source feeds come from quality assured providers such as IEEE, INTUTE, The Engineers Journal etc.

New Cork School of Music Library Website

The CIT Cork School of Music Library now has its very own website. This can be accessed at http://library.cit.ie/screens/schoolofmusic.html.

The site includes the entire catalogue of the CSM Library as well as other useful material relating to the library and its various resources. If anybody has any questions relating to the CSM library, they can contact the CSM Librarian, Maeve Fleischmann at Maeve.Fleischmann@cit.ie.

Introduction of Online Conference Room booking Facility:

Please note that the new online library conference room booking system is up and running at the following link: Library Conference Room Booking and is available via the Library homepage http://library.cit.ie/

There is a list of basic instructions which you should read i.e. conference room bookings, prior to making a booking.

On making a booking the date, time and purpose of the meeting will appear on the calendar, e.g. Library Staff Meeting, April 13th, 1pm -2pm, and so it becomes apparent that this time-slot has been taken. Bookings previously made have been added to this ‘online calendar’ but all future bookings should be made via this facility.
